Jon Gomm is widely regarded as one of the most innovative acoustic guitarists and singer-songwriters of his generation. Known for his extraordinary fingerstyle technique, percussive playing and powerful vocals, Jon has built a global audience through performances that blur the lines between guitarist, singer and percussionist. His music demands microphones that can capture subtle detail and huge dynamic range at the same time, whether on stage or in the studio.
As Jon puts it:
“I love Sontronics. My go-to for stage and studio. They just soak up sound, and you can't believe how good the results are before any processing.”
Jon first discovered Sontronics while searching for a new live vocal microphone. After testing a number of high-end options in a music store and finding them underwhelming, the store manager encouraged him to try something different.
“I fell in love with Sontronics one day when I'd decided to upgrade my live vocal mic, and I spent an afternoon in a store trying out all the most expensive ones they had, finding them all disappointing. The store manager kept saying ‘hey why don't you try this one’, but it cost less than my old one, and I was trying to upgrade! But in the end I tried it out of desperation, and it was just exceptional.”
That microphone was the STC-80, the handheld vocal mic that would later be succeeded by the SOLO, now Jon’s go-to microphone for live performance. With improvements in clarity, handling noise rejection and design, the SOLO continues the legacy of the original mic that first impressed him.
“It was so neutral, but still powerful, handled beautifully, and could deal with anything. It needs no EQ, but responds to EQ enthusiastically too. It's clean, quiet, and doesn't mind if you step back from the ‘sweet spot’. It's great for speaking too, and I even put it in front of my acoustic guitar sometimes.”
Since that first encounter, Jon has explored more of the Sontronics range and continues to be impressed by what he hears.
“Since then I've tried quite a lot of the Sontronics range, and I've always had the same experience, except now I've learned to ignore how low the price is.”
Over the years, Jon’s unique approach to guitar has earned him millions of views online, a devoted global fanbase and praise from fellow musicians and producers alike. Whether performing solo on stage or recording in the studio, his work is built on capturing every nuance of a performance, something his choice of microphones plays an important role in delivering.
