ASH SOAN

Drummer · Educator

(Adele, Rod Stewart, Cher, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Alicia Keys, Seal, Dua Lipa, Take That, Snow Patrol, Tate McRae, Robbie Williams, and Billy Idol)

Ash Soan has built a reputation as one of the UK's most sought-after session drummers, bringing his distinctive groove, feel and musicality to recordings and performances around the world. With a career spanning decades, his playing can be heard alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Adele, Taylor Swift, Robbie Williams, Cher, Snow Patrol and many more.

Renowned for his ability to serve the song rather than simply the beat, Ash has developed a playing style that combines technical precision with an instinctive, expressive approach. Whether he's laying down a subtle groove or delivering a powerful drum performance, his focus remains on creating something that feels right for the music.

Away from the stage, Ash operates his own recording space, Windmill Studio, where he records drum tracks for artists, producers and projects across the world. The studio gives him the freedom to experiment with different sounds, microphone placements and recording techniques, capturing the character and energy of his performances.

It's here that Sontronics microphones have become part of his recording setup. Ash uses the APOLLO 2 stereo ribbon microphone as a drum overhead, alongside the SATURN 2 multi-pattern condenser microphone, with both bringing a warmth and richness to his drum recordings that he particularly enjoys.

The APOLLO 2 captures the kit with the smooth, natural character associated with ribbon microphones, helping to bring the different elements of the drums together into a cohesive sound. Alongside it, the SATURN 2 offers additional flexibility and tonal character, giving Ash further creative options when shaping his recordings.

For Ash, getting a great drum sound isn't necessarily about using the most microphones or having the most elaborate setup. It's about understanding the instrument, listening to the room and taking the time to discover what works.

Ash's advice for recording drums:

"A great drum sound doesn't have to start with a complicated setup. Take your time, start with one or two microphones and experiment with where you place them. You'll be surprised how much the sound can change. Don't be afraid to try different ways of dampening the drums or the room either. The important thing is to listen, experiment and find the sound that works for you."

With a career built around feel, creativity and musical expression, Ash continues to demonstrate that great drum recordings begin with a great performance, supported by the right tools to capture it.
